In order to provide a better transport system and to facilitate the general public, an independent Transport Department was established in September 2008 with the mandate to endeavor for efficient, affordable comfortable, reliable, safe and environment friendly transport system and provide accessibility and mobility for people and goods.
The transport and Mass Transit Department has adopted a strategic approach to urban development including the introduction of a modern BRT system and has put in place a robust institutional framework. The GoKP has streamlined the institutional framework by establishing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) and TransPeshawar Company (The Urban Mobility Company). KPUMA is responsible for the development of policies and regulations, planning, coordination, project preparation and funding for all projects related to urban transport system including mass transit, Whereas TransPeshawar is intended to be responsible for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) maintenance, operations and service contract management.
Under the umbrella of the above, two institutions, The Peshawar BRT project is a flagship project of provincial government not just in the development of the physical infrastructure of the city but as a catalyst for urban regeneration and growth. Successful completion of the project will lead to greater economic activity and prosperity as well as providing the people, who live, work and visit the city a world-class transport service.
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high quality high capacity transport system, which provides fast, efficient, reliable and comfortable mode of transport for the travelers. In a BRT system, the buses will travel in a dedicated corridor to avoid the congestion on the road. BRT will also provide improved waiting facilities and supporting infrastructure for passengers such as e-ticketing and real time information about bus schedules.
The department endeavors to facilitate the public through a modern and decent public Transport.
